Sport England has funded, developed and today launched a suite of films aimed at promoting best practice use of the Primary PE and Sport Premium.
The Primary PE and Sport Premium is designed to help primary schools improve the quality of the PE and sport activities they offer their pupils, with £450 million being spent on this over the three academic years up to 2015/16.
Sport England and other national partners are working with the Government to support the Primary PE and Sport Premium fund and have collectively developed the following vision for PE and School Sport:
“All pupils leaving primary school physically literate and with the knowledge, skills and motivation necessary to equip them for a healthy lifestyle and lifelong participation in physical activity and sport.”
Sport England’s films are being used as a means to engage with primary schools and raise the profile of the Premium and Best Practice Use in schools.
Targeted at head teachers, governors, staff and coaches, the films carry some important messages and carry some key messages, namely:
• Engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity
• A tool for whole school improvement
• Increase the confidence and skills of all staff in teaching PE
• More children – more sports – more competition
Sport England's video suite coincides with a new Coaching in Schools Portal, a website from Sports Coach UK aimed at helping headteachers recruit, develop and use coaches effectively using the government funding.
The importance of school sport is also reflected in the Alliance’s Ministers’ To Do List project, launched last month. The project aims to give incoming ministers a list of priorities with a strong mandate from the Alliance’s members.
The second proposal of the To-Do List asks for increased investment in Initial Teacher Training for primary school teachers to ensure high quality PE, sport and physical activity from the start of the educational journey.
It also proposes that all physical education should be delivered by qualified teachers and coaches and should be assessed by Ofsted.
The shared theme of the Alliance campaign and the Sport England films is that best practice should be promoted in order to encourage children to enjoy physical education, sport and physical activity from a young age in the hope that positive experiences during school will cater for a fit, active and healthy life.
