The Sport and Recreation Alliance wishes to pay tribute to John Veats, an honorary life vice president of British Rowing, who died peacefully at home on 14 July.
John made a significant contribution to the Sport and Recreation Alliance at board level, where he was elected as an honorary member and served as chairman of the water recreation division.
John also received the Alliance’s coveted Emeritus Award in 2004, which is given to individuals who have made an outstanding and lifelong contribution to sport and recreation.
A committed volunteer and officer of British Rowing for over 33 years, he served in many roles including chairman and honorary treasurer and received a medal of honour.
He was a member of the organising committee of the World Rowing Championships in 1975, and vice chairman of the organising committee of the Championships in 1986.
Annamarie Phelps, chairman of British Rowing, said:
"John was a talented schoolboy rower with a lifelong passion for rowing and supporting those working in the sport. He was always generous with his time and knowledge and will be greatly missed."
Tim Lamb, chief executive of the Sport and Recreation Alliance, said:
“John made an invaluable contribution to sport over many years and also to our organisation. He played a key role in modernising and streamlining our board during his time with us, but we will miss him most as a delightful and generous friend and former colleague.”
