Shortlist announced for Alliance's Sport Parliamentarian of the Year Award

The Sport and Recreation Alliance has compiled the nominee list for this year’s Sports Parliamentarian of the Year Award.

The award, which was won by John Woodcock last year, is an opportunity to pay tribute to those MPs and Peers who have worked tirelessly to support and promote sport and recreation.

It lists eleven MPs and Peers, drawn from all three major political parties, with the overall winner to be announced at a dinner at the House of Commons on 4 December.

The cut and thrust of British politics may not be the first thing you think of when looking back at the sporting achievements of 2012, but a lot of important work has  taken place in Westminster over the past twelve months.

The nominations, submitted by ten sport and recreation bodies, will now be considered by an awarding panel led by former Alliance chair and current vice-president Brigid Simmonds OBE.

Joining Brigid are Olympic gold medallist Duncan Goodhew MBE, sports broadcaster Jacqui Oatley, TUC General Secretary (and avid sports fan) Brendan Barber, and Alliance chief executive Tim Lamb.
