PPL and PRS for Music are committed to simplifying music licensing and from 1 January 2014, PPL and PRS for Music will introduce a new joint licence for eligible amateur sports clubs which will be administered by PPL.
Historically, many amateur sports clubs did not require a licence from PPL when using recorded music. Following a change in law, amateur sports clubs are now, in almost all cases, required to hold a PPL licence as well as a PRS for Music licence.
As part of this process PPL and PRS for Music have been in discussions with the Sport and Recreation Alliance and have each created a tariff for the new joint licence to help simplify music licensing for amateur sports clubs.
PPL will act as an agent for PRS for Music, issuing the new joint licence which grants amateur sports clubs the permissions needed from both organisations to play recorded music, and from PRS for Music to host live music.
PPL and PRS for Music have been in touch with amateur sports clubs to check if their club is eligible for the joint licence and to review music usage to ensure that amateur sports clubs are correctly licensed.
For amateur sports clubs that currently hold either a PPL or PRS for Music licence, PPL will contact these clubs with more information about the joint licence when their current licence is due for its next annual renewal.
For those amateur sports clubs that currently hold both a PPL and PRS for Music licence, PPL will create a single start date for the joint licence which will begin from whichever renewal date is later.
