In the past few days the Scottish Government has launched a public consultation on its plans to introduce a licensing system for the sport of airgun shooting.
The proposals include a ban on people plinking – informal target shooting at nonstandard targets such as tin cans and glass bottles – in gardens and also the introduction of visitor permits for people wishing to visit Scotland to compete in airgun target shooting competitions.
The British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC) is concerned that further regulation will discourage many from taking up the sport – which is a vital part of the Scottish countryside and rural economy – and as a result has called on all of its members to show solidarity with Scottish airgunners by signing an online petition, supporting a Facebook campaign and responding to the consultation.
BASC intends to publish a detailed response to the consultation in the New Year and urges everyone with an interest in the sport of airgun shooting in Scotland to make their own response.
