Alliance help launch the Governance and Leadership Framework for Wales

The Sport and Recreation Alliance helped launch the Governance and Leadership Framework for Wales on 21 April at a conference in Cardiff.

The framework is a modified version of the Sport and Recreation Alliance's Voluntary Code of Good Governance and was created following extensive consultation over the past twelve-months with Sport Wales. Sport Wales lead on the development of the new framework after liaisons with the sport and recreation sector in Wales highlighted a need for improved governance and leadership.

The Governance and Leadership Framework includes '7 Principles of Good Governance' and introduces the importance of Board leadership behaviours in order to make a significant shift of governance standards within the Sector. The sector also identified and committed to meeting "minimum expectations" contained within the Framework to help drive governance and leadership standards through to 2019 and beyond.

With contributions from Amanda Bennett (Fair Play Enterprises Limited), Anne Storey and Craig Hunter (Personnel Dynamics Limited), Lucy Faulkner (Lucy Faulkner Limited), Gemma Morgan (Leadership Specialist), National Governing Bodies of Sport in Wales, Young Ambassadors, Sport Wales, and the Alliance amongst others, the event saw the sector come together to embrace the introduction of the Framework and provided an opportunity to discuss how organisations can implement it and monitor its success.

Governance Manager at the Sport and Recreation Alliance, Vijaya Panangipalli, said, “The Framework launch event attracted over 100 attendees from over 40 different organisations. This to me is a clear demonstration that the sport sector is willing to take the pledge to change the governance practises and change for better. It would be to the advantage of the sport boards to really consider their current practises and use this Framework to future-proof their organisation for the ever changing environment.”
