Finance Director

England Golf is the national governing body for amateur golf in England. As a non-profit organisation dedicated to growing the game, their work benefits around 1,800 golf clubs and 650,000 players as well as reaching up to two million others who engage with golf.

Due to celebrate their centenary in 2024, England Golf, as it is today, formed in 2012 as a merger between the English Golf Union, the governing body for men, and the English Women's Golf Association.

In addition to the work they undertake for the game daily, England Golf run premier and prestigious events including the English Amateur Championship, The Brabazon Trophy and national handicap events for regular club golfers as well as administering the handicapping system for golf in England.

Role

Based in the beautiful town of Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire, England Golf is looking for a finance director to join the organisation at an exciting time of growth and opportunities and who shares their passion for the game of golf and all it can achieve locally and nationally. They offer a unique, rare and high-profile opportunity to provide strategic and financial guidance to ensure that England Golf and Woodhall Spa Golf Management 2005 Ltd’s financial commitments are met. The successful candidate will lead the promotion and delivery by the whole organisation of good financial management so that it is always safeguarded, used appropriately, economically, efficiently and effectively.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

  • Advising the CEO, senior managers and the Board on all matters relating to and supporting financial strategy, stability and the organisation’s position.
  • Overseeing and managing the finance team.
  • Working closely with the CEO on future developments of the National Golf Centre.
  • Overseeing and supervising adherence to financial strategies and regulations.
  • Evaluating/reviewing/managing financial systems, internal controls, financial policies and procedures.
  • Financial planning, forecasting, budget setting and monitoring, producing all financial and management information for the AGM and Senior Management team/stakeholders.
  • Managing and reviewing cashflows and investments, treasury, fee collection processes, insurances as well as contributing to WSGM business planning.
  • Managing statutory tax and VAT obligations.
  • Working with external providers in respect to insurance, pensions, audit, payroll.

Person Specification

You will be a qualified accountant to at least CIMA, ACCA, ACA or CIPFA level with a wide and sound knowledge of finance systems, software, regulation, reporting and accounting practices within non-profit and profit based organisations. You will ideally have experience of Payroll and RTI reporting, VAT and Partial Exemption rules.

You will have the proven ability to produce accurate and timely financial reports, liaise with statutory agencies, prepare and present financial and management accounts, reports and data as well as having excellent complex budget management and preparation skills. You will have strong skills in understanding and analysing financial data and be able to explain information clearly, accurately and appropriately especially to non-financial and senior finance colleagues.

You will have the ability to lead and influence others, maintain morale/motivation and to prioritise responsibilities under pressure. You will have excellent communication skills at all levels with both internal and external stakeholders coupled with personal integrity and confidentiality.

You will have significant experience in direct management and control of a minimum of £5 million T/0 organisation with group accounting/consolidation exposure. Experience of overseeing financial planning and project execution would be highly desirable as would a knowledge of golf and sports governance.
