Purposes of the post

To lead and deliver the Finance and Governance management functions at London Sport. Establish and maintain smooth financial processes for the organisation. Ensure that London Sport is legally compliant and has sound governance.

Main activities and responsibilities

1. To report to the Chief Executive, Board of Trustees and Directors in the areas of finance, governance and risk management, including the preparation of meeting papers and the provision of recommendations to these groups on issues of Finance and Governance

2. To ensure all London Sport’s financial affairs are maintained and managed in a timely and accurate manner in accordance with current good practice

3. To undertake all aspects of financial management and control, including budgeting, reporting and producing management and statutory accounts in line with SORP and legal requirements

4. To be responsible for liaising with: auditors, bankers, insurers, and legal advisors; HM Revenue & Customs, Charity Commission and Companies House and any others as appropriate

5. To undertake financial processing (accounts received and accounts payable) using SAGE

6. To oversee contracted services and review the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of London Sport’s operations, including premises, IT systems and Human Resources

7. To take responsibility for London Sport’s Human Resources provision, and to keep up-to-date personnel files and relevant policies (e.g. personnel, health and safety etc)

8. To oversee and be accountable for the delivery of plans/goals for Finance & Governance section developing appropriate systems for target setting, accountability, responsibility, decision making, monitoring and evaluation and reporting for the section

9. To ensure that all staff are supported, managed, coached and performance managed in the Finance & Governance section

10. To ensure self-development of skills and knowledge as required by the role and to champion personal and career development in the Finance & Governance section

11. To continually seek best practice and strive to identify and implement service improvement

12. To deputise for the Senior Management Team at key forums and meetings where necessary.

13. To undertake any other duties deemed relevant by the Board or the Chief Executive Officer.

Selection Criteria:

• A degree or equivalent qualification

• Fully qualified Chartered Accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, or equivalent) with at least three years’ post-qualified experience.

• A proven track record of significant achievement at a strategic level gained by experience in a field relevant to this post

• Several years’ experience of working in financial roles, including the production of financial statements in line with SORP requirements

• Exposure to, and involvement with, a range of governance issues, ideally including servicing Board/governance committees and drafting policies and contracts

• Direct hands-on experience of SAGE (or similar) financial system, particularly within a small organisation

• Solid experience of producing statutory accounts and working with auditors

• Experience of fundraising, in particular supporting grant applications and reporting to funders with financial information

• Knowledge of charity law, Gift Aid and VAT rules and regulation

• Excellent written and oral communications skills, including ability to present financial information to non-finance audiences

• Experience of performance managing, coaching and developing a staff team

• Sound strategic, critical thinking and decision making skills, with a track-record of finding solutions to delivery challenges

• Excellent communication and inter-personal skills; the ability to enthuse, persuade, negotiate and influence in the spoken word and in writing

• Excellent organisational skills; the ability to manage multiple projects, prioritise and meet deadlines

• Ability to work under pressure and to adopt a flexible approach to working methods

• Excellent IT skills
