Official launch of new sports governance qualification

Yesterday saw the launch of a new qualification aimed at improving the standard of governance in sport.

The Sport and Recreation Alliance, in partnership with the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (ICSA), has worked with a panel of experts from across the sports sector to develop and launch the Advanced Certificate in Sport Governance and Administration.

Hosted by Gateley Plc, the event saw Alliance CEO Emma Boggis and ICSA CEO, Simon Osborne introduce the new qualification to an audience of senior representatives from across the sport and recreation sector.

Commenting at the launch and in light of the protection for sports funding within the Spending Review Emma Boggis said, “With access to public funds comes responsibility – and therefore need for good governance is paramount.”

“The Alliance has a strong history of developing stronger governance principles for the sector through our work the Voluntary Code of Good Governance and I’m sure this qualification will only contribute further to embedding good governance within the sector.”

Former Minister for Sport, Colin Moynihan, also addressed the audience to highlight the importance of good governance in sport and the benefits it brings, both to the management of NGBs and, more widely, helping the sector achieve its goals to increase participation, continue world-class performance and promote increased diversity at all levels, from grassroots to the boardroom.
