This report summarises the key findings of the Sports Club Survey 2017/18, identifying major trends, providing a SWOT analysis of sport and recreation clubs in England and offers a range of recommendations to Sport England and sport sector partners. The data and our wider insight provides a view of the current state of sport and recreation clubs in England.
The landscape is challenging – with finances and access to facilities identified as significant as particularly prevalent issues for the sector. Overall, the sector’s health at club level could be characterised as broadly positive with progress in some areas since 2013 – including in membership and volunteer numbers. Some areas are consistently challenging - a combination of falling income and increasing costs across several areas.
