Celebrate your volunteers with #BigThankYou

Join in with the largest celebration of  volunteers in grassroots sport across the UK.  The campaign, led by  BBC Get Inspired and us, showcases the enormous contribution of our 5.6 million sport volunteers to their local communities and all they do in helping build an active nation.

Why is a #BigThankYou so important?

Despite loving what they do and doing more, sports volunteers are far more likely than other volunteers to stop volunteering. A massive 32% stopped or reduced their volunteering compared with 17% of general volunteers. Volunteers need to feel valued for their contribution – despite the unpaid nature of what they do. Every volunteer deserves the recognition for the work they do for our clubs and groups.

So, whether it's a coach that helps build a player's confidence, an enthusiastic marshal who motivates someone to push a bit harder or the club secretary keeping the books balanced, please join in and make sure you say a big thank you to your volunteers – not just during the campaign, but throughout the year.

Get your club involved

During the month of December, grassroots sports clubs and physical activity groups across the country are encouraged to thank their volunteers on social media using the hashtag #BigThankYou.

BBC Sports Personality of the Year

The #BigThankYou campaign peaks during BBC Get Inspired’s Unsung Hero Award at BBC Sports Personality of the Year. The Award provides the centre piece of the campaign and honours volunteers in local communities across the UK who go above and beyond to encourage people to participate in sport and physical activity.

As the hero is crowned, clubs and groups across the country are invited to broadcast their #BigThankYou celebrations across social media. Feeling the love for volunteers is what this moment is all about and grassroots clubs and groups joining together to issue a big thank you.
