Following the publication today of the More than a Game report from the Centre for Social Justice, the Sport and Recreation Alliance believes that sports policy needs to be developed and implemented as a whole rather than broken up into silos.
Chief Executive Tim Lamb said:
“Whilst it is true that sport is a great tool for improving social justice and targeting disaffected young people, it does sport a disservice to focus on this in isolation. In fact, the Alliance believes that sport would be better served by having more cross-cutting departmental power, not less.
“Any focus on sport is of course welcome and the Alliance agrees with the CSJ that access to facilities, issues surrounding red tape and coaching need to be improved. However, it is concerned that by focussing solely on one section of sporting policy and making recommendations on it the CSJ hasn’t taken account of the bigger picture. Sport as a force for good is something to which the country is clearly committed and this report is a welcome contribution to a broader discussion on how this can be achieved.”
