The Community Amateur Sports Club (CASC) scheme has this month celebrated its 6,000th member - Ampfield Crusaders Cricket Club, Ampfield, Hampshire. Launched in 2002, the scheme has saved £100 million through access to mandatory rate relief; the ability to claim gift aid and an exemption from corporation tax.
What the scheme also does is to make the clubs a central part of their community. In return for the financial incentives, clubs pledge to be open and accessible, to remain non-profit-making and to promote participation.
Tim Lamb, Chief Executive of the Sport and Recreation Alliance, celebrated the news:
“We support the CASC scheme for the simple reason that it works. And we’re not resting on our laurels, we’re campaigning to have the scheme enhanced so that more clubs are enticed to join, particularly those which don’t own their own premises.”
Hugh Robertson MP, Minister for Sport, will today be speaking at the Alliance CASC event in central London. He will be joined by Fred Turok, chair of the Responsibility Deal for Physical Activity. The event seeks to encourage even more clubs to sign up, to answer any questions and to garner support for the scheme.
