About Us

RYA stands for Royal Yachting Association. Set up in 1875 as the Yacht Racing Association, the RYA has since become the national governing body for dinghy, motor and sail cruising, all forms of sail racing, RIBs and sportsboats, windsurfing and personal watercraft and a leading representative body for inland waterways cruising. The RYA exists to get more people into boating and watersport activities, promote safe boating practices and raise the standards of yachting and sailing in the UK through its network of more than 2,400 RYA recognised training centres in more than 58 countries, and more than 1,500 RYA affiliated clubs. About the Role

Two candidates are being sought to replace Ronan Harte and Adam Jay who will be leaving the Board in November, Ronan having reached the end of his term and Adam stepping down to aid board member rotation. Following a skills evaluation, the Board is keen to receive applications from enthusiastic and forward-thinking candidates with either;

A deep insight of grass roots dinghy sailing, performance pathways or experience of elite sports at a strategic level or;

Those experienced in taking a strategic approach to sustainability covering environment, social and governance issues. The successful candidate would support the RYA in maintaining its recognised leading role in sustainability in sport.

The RYA’s Board of Directors supervises the management of the RYA’s business and discharges the responsibilities of the directors under the Companies Act 2006. It meets up to eight times per year, either virtually or physically in London or Southampton. The role may mean an increased investment of time at certain times of the year, and you may be asked to invest time in other projects.

The four-year term starts with effect from this year’s AGM, with the opportunity to stand for a second term. This is a non-remunerated role, but basic travel expenses are paid.
