Welfare and Safety Non-Executive Director

A new opportunity exists at British Gymnastics for a Non-Executive Welfare and Safety Lead Director who can offer guidance, support, expertise, and an objective perspective on the key matters of welfare and safety, strategy, governance, financial affairs, and risk management.

This is a vitally important time for British Gymnastics and the sport of gymnastics, we are about to embark on the development of a new long-term strategy which will be co-produced with our members and stakeholders, setting our culture, our strategic intentions, and our objectives. The soon to be published independent Whyte review will be acted upon and will further inform the reforms required to ensure our sport provides a fun, safe and rewarding environment for everyone.

The Board has a duty towards the welfare and safety of the organisation’s employees, members, and any other people for whom it is responsible. The NED Welfare and Safety will ensure that the board has an appropriate oversight of all aspects of welfare and safety including safeguarding (adults and children), mental health and wellbeing (including psychological safety), anti-doping and integrity issues.

We are seeking applicants who have a varied range of skills and experience, including the ability to challenge in a constructive way, to be forward thinking and passionate about making a difference. Applicants should also have appropriate understanding of welfare and safety issues relevant to British Gymnastics including legislative and regulatory requirements for safeguarding children and adults at risk and our duty of care to all members, volunteers, and employees. Whilst not essential, we would welcome applicants with athlete experience in any sport as well as applicants from diverse communities and backgrounds.

If you believe you have the experience we are looking for, British Gymnastics would like to encourage you to apply for this position. With respect to the time commitment the role will require attendance at four Board meetings per year plus an annual strategy day, before other commitments are accounted for. You will play a big part in helping British Gymnastics deliver a strategic plan that will build on our past success and further develop the sport, both within the UK and internationally on the journey to Paris and beyond.
