Chief Executive

  • Location: West Midlands
  • Organisation: British Equestrian Federation
  • Closing Date: 23 November 2020 | Board & Executive

British Equestrian is the National Governing Body for horse sports in the UK, affiliated to the Federation Equestre Internationale (FEI), the international governing body of equestrian sports.

Established in 1972, British Equestrian is the umbrella organisation for its 18 independent member bodies (14 members and four associates) and today is the largest representative body within the equestrian industry in the UK; representing the interests of over 3 million riders, vaulters and carriage drivers (14 members and four associates). Its role is to be the voice of and provide leadership for all who are inspired by and enjoy horses.

British Equestrian fulfils a unique and vital role in supporting the inspirational and ongoing international success of equestrian sports on the Olympic, Paralympic, World and European stages, and also in raising participation in horse sports nationally. It serves these key activities through undertaking several core functions, including: liaising and coordinating with the FEI on international events, governance and training, and protecting the welfare of the horse; representing the common interests of its member bodies to Government and other bodies; distributing government funding, received from UK Sport and Sport England, and by connecting people to riding centres, schools, clubs and equestrian sporting organisations, working with its Member Bodies in helping people to discover horses, get fit and improve their wellbeing.

This is a critical and exciting time to take up the post of Chief Executive of British Equestrian. Candidates will require the personal credibility to represent and promote UK Equestrian Sport at the highest international levels, to engage with the diverse interests and needs of its 18 Member Body constituencies and to build a sustainable future for the Federation.

It is a complex and highly rewarding role requiring strong leadership, with excellent diplomatic and communication skills. The CEO will serve the equestrian community by promoting the commonality of interests and balancing the needs of Member Bodies. The successful candidate will work together with and support the Member Bodies to deliver on shared principal objectives: upholding the highest standards of both governance and of equine and human welfare; increasing participation and maintaining the UK’s status as a leading nation in equine sport; delivering robust financial management, maximising the resources available, planning for reduced government funding and identifying alternative income streams. As such, the Chief Executive will play an essential part in ensuring the long-term sustainability of equestrianism in the UK for the benefit of people and horses.
