Non-Executive Chair

Salary: Remunerated with travel expenses reimbursed

Location: Nationwide

ATHLETICS is the Nation’s number one Olympic and Paralympic sport and was the most successful sport overall at London 2012 Games. UK Athletics (“UKA”) is the National Governing Body for Athletics in the UK. Our four primary roles are: governance of the sport, staging world class events, securing commercial income to fund the sport and developing athletes and coaches to achieve success on the world stage. UK Athletics is working closely with the Home Country Athletic Federations (“HCAFs”) to finalise and agree a new Strategy for Athletics in the UK. This fresh, ambitious, unified vision for the sport covers all areas of activity, including mass participation, athlete pathways, coaching, elite performance, major events and commercial income, whilst putting schools, clubs, coaches and volunteers at its heart. UKA is now seeking a new Chair to lead the organisation.

The Role: Overview

  • Strategic leadership of Athletics in the UK in partnership with the Chairs of the HCAFs and the President of UK Members Council.
  • Oversee the development of a detailed strategy for those areas of the Athletics Strategy that are UKA’s responsibility to manage and deliver.
  • Oversee the delivery of the World Class Performance Programme and the associated targets for medal success on the world stage.
  • Ensure the continued delivery and innovation of world class events to build the brand of athletics and engage the public.
  • Develop an inspirational culture that is open, collaborative and drives behaviours consistent with UKA’s values.
  • Develop long-term, effective working relationships with key international and national stakeholders and the wider sport.
  • Lead UKA’s Board to the highest standards of probity and governance.

The Candidate: Essential Skills

  • Experience in successfully setting and implementing strategy for an organisation of a similar scale and complexity as Chair, CEO or senior equivalent, particularly through periods of change.
  • Knowledge and an understanding of sport (athletics desirable), especially governance structures and the opportunities and challenges that affords.
  • Chairing a body or panel with varied composition, including experience of building consensus across a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Excellent interpersonal, leadership, communication and influencing skills.
  • Good knowledge of Corporate Governance and Board responsibilities, accustomed to a high level of accountability.
  • Demonstrable independence, impartiality and integrity (see specific independence requirements).
