The Sport and Recreation Alliance and the Birkbeck Sport Business Centre present “Grassroots sports governance: Improving governance in the non-profit sport sector”

This workshop is perfect for sports clubs, community clubs, volunteers or organisers of sports activities in local communities, who are looking to review and revise their current organisational structure or need help establishing good governance practices.

Highlights:

  • Learn about the benefits of implementing good governance within your club or activity group;
  • Get practical advice from sports governance experts;
  • Network with other grassroots organisations, volunteers and sport representatives.

Good governance is necessary to shape the leadership of grassroots sports. Well governed clubs and organisations perform better and increase their credibility among funders, commercial partners and members.

The event will be led by the Sport and Recreation Alliance Governance team and Dr. Richard Tacon and Dr. Geoff Walters, Co-Directors of the Birkbeck Sport Business Centre.

This is a FREE workshop but registration is required.

Networking with light refreshments will take place after the workshop.

6.15 p.m.       Welcome by Dr. Geoff Walters and Dr. Richard Tacon, Birkbeck University

 

6.20 pm         Introduction to the Alliance and Volunteering by Chantel Scherer

 

6.25 p.m.        Governance in sport: What does the research say?

Dr. Geoff Walters and Dr. Richard Tacon, from Birkbeck, University of London, will present key findings from their programme of research on governance in the sport sector, including two UK-wide surveys in 2011 and 2018 and in-depth case study research with sport organisations. There will then be a short Q and A session.

 

6.45 p.m.        Governance in sport: What does the good governance mean for Grassroots sports sector? 

                        Marianna Sikorowska, Governance Officer at the Sport and Recreation Alliance will talk briefly about key governance documents and share best practices and top tips for Good Governance for your grassroots club or organisation.  Marianna will touch base on the support available for club governance and volunteering.

 

7.00 p.m.        Governance in sport: What are the challenges for grassroots sport organisations?

                        Participants will discuss in small groups what the key challenges are for grassroots sport organisations and what further research, support and guidance would be most useful.

 

7.20 p.m.        Refreshments and networking

                        Participants will have the opportunity to drink, eat, meet and chat with fellow participants and the workshop organisers. This will be a further chance to ask questions, begin discussions, identify areas where more research, support and guidance might help grassroots sport organisations.
