Trustees

  • Location: London
  • Organisation: Access Sport
  • Salary: Voluntary
  • Closing Date: 12 August 2022 | Board & Executive

Access Sport CIO is a national charity, founded in 2004. Our vision is that no-one should be excluded from the transformational benefits of community sport. To achieve this, we tackle the access barriers faced by disadvantaged and disabled young people. We do this by training, equipping, and supporting community sports clubs, organisations, and volunteers to provide inclusive programmes, unleashing their potential to transform the lives of underserved young people in their local communities. If you share our vision and feel you have the passion, energy, requisite skills and experience to work with us by becoming a Trustee, we would love to hear from you. This role is unpaid but offers huge rewards of a non-monetary kind.

Trustee Role Description

Access Sport believes that a more diverse board is more likely to engage in better informed and constructive analysis and makes better decisions as a result.

Today we are a UK leading and diverse board, 50% of the Board consider themselves to have lived experience of low socio-economic groups, 30% from ethnically diverse communities and 10% at risk of educational exclusion and crime. 40% of the Board are female.

Yet we do not stand still, our Board and Management Team have established targets to make Access Sport the No.1 Board in all diversity and inclusion metrics and strengthen our engagement with the Youth Board and the communities we serve.

Through our Trustee succession planning process, vacancies are opening up for new Trustees today and over the next months. Therefore, we are looking to enhance the Board by actively encouraging applications from people from the following groups:

  • D/deaf and/or disabled people
  • People from underprivileged backgrounds
  • People from ethnically diverse communities

And with some of the following skills and experience:

  • Income generation and fundraising
  • Political awareness and networking
  • Local Government / regional issues
  • Disability inclusive sport

Although previous experience at Board level in other public or private organisations is desirable, we encourage those without such experience to apply as the breadth of their experience engaging in our sector and commitment to and alignment with our mission and goals make them very suitable candidates to enrich the scope of our Board’s collective capabilities.

This could not be a more exciting time to join the Board of Trustees and support the charity. We appointed a new CEO at the start of 2022 and have developed a growth strategy and brand refresh launching in Summer 2022. To achieve that goal, the Board agrees the business plan, the budget, performance and impact targets on an annual basis. It monitors the charity’s performance and is responsible for the management of risk and compliance with regulatory and statutory requirements.

Time commitment

  • Trustees will serve a four-year term, with an option for a second term of four years if mutually agreed
  • On average 1 day per month
  • Trustees are expected to lead, assist and participate in one or more of the Board’s committees and working groups including: Finance and Audit, Income Generation, and Nominations, and, if appropriate, local Steering Groups in Bristol, Manchester and Oxford
  • Meetings are held in-person in London or online

Recruitment Process

As mentioned previously, the appointment of new trustees is part of our ongoing succession planning.

If you’re interested in becoming a Trustee and have the skills and experience to support and help further develop our organisation please send us:
