Non-Executive Governance and Legal Director

  • Location: London
  • Organisation: BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport)
  • Salary: Voluntary with expenses covered
  • Contract: 3 year term
  • Closing Date: 14 October 2020 | Non Executive Director

BUCS is led by a Board of Directors, consisting of our Chair, seven independent Directors and two directors from membership. All posts are recruited through open advertisement.

The Chief Executive, Chief Operating Officer and the Company Secretary also sit on the Board but, for reasons of Trust status, are not formally directors of the Company.

Since its inauguration in 2008, BUCS has been successful in raising the profile of university sport and has engaged with many national funders of sport and corporate organisations. It has raised the profile of competitive sport in higher education and promoted the importance of student sport both inside and outside university communities. The current Covid-19 pandemic has created a challenging time for everyone and particularly impacted the world of sport and Higher Education, with no activity having taken place since March 2020. BUCS is working hard on Return to Play plans as well as providing support to members through network opportunities and webinar events covering topics such as facility management and mental wellbeing. For further details on the work of BUCS, please visit the website www.bucs.org.uk.

We will achieve our mission and vision by broadening the scope of our strategic vision to encompass the full range of activity which takes place within the university sport setting, from physical activity and health through to performance sport; creating a workforce within the membership and the communities within universities; and raising the profile of BUCS within these communities and externally with key strategic partners, including celebrating the successes and impact of the delivery of our association to the fullest.

The Board plays a key role in guiding the strategic direction of BUCS and achieving the aims of the strategy. Further information on the current BUCS strategy can be found here.

Please submit a CV and cover letter outlining your skills, experience and suitability for the role to the Company Secretary, Claire Livesey, at claire.livesey@bucs.org.uk. You should ensure you are eligible to serve as a trustee of a charity.

Please provide two referees who we can contact with your permission. We may do this before interview, but not without your permission.

Applications will be assessed by the BUCS Nominations Committee, who may invite candidates for interview during October 2020 (currently likely to be 22 or 23 October). The Nominations Committee will then make a recommendation to the BUCS AGM on 9 December 2020 for ratification.

The closing date for applications is midnight on Wednesday 14 October 2020.

For further information or an informal discussion concerning the roles or organisation, you are welcome to contact Vince Mayne, CEO, at vince.mayne@bucs.org.uk or the Chair, Craig Mahoney, at craig.mahoney@uws.ac.uk
