Job Description

The Appointment 

Badminton England is in an exciting period of business transformation as the organisation continues its journey towards the achievement of its vision. 

Badminton England is one of the leading governing bodies of sport in England. It has grown the sport to be the fifth biggest participation sport in England, it owns the All England Open Badminton Championships – the greatest and most prestigious Open Championships in the world and a grand slam tournament that reaches a global audience of 250 million annually. 

As its strives to consistently medal at World, Olympic and Paralympic level, in little over two years, the performance programme has achieved GB’s first ever Men’s Doubles Olympic medal, a World Championship medal, 6 Commonwealth medals, 3 European golds, one silver and two bronze and in Parabadminton, Team England won 8 World Championship medals including 4 gold and it won an amazing 14 European medals, including 7 gold.

Main Tasks, Duties and Responsibilities 

Strategic 

• All Board members are expected to provide strategic leadership, insight and guidance to ensure that Badminton England achieves their strategic objectives. 
• Make a positive contribution to the ongoing development and review of the strategy. 

Leadership 
• All Board members are expected to provide strategic leadership, insight and guidance to ensure that Badminton England achieves their strategic objectives. 
• Make a positive contribution to the ongoing development and review of the strategy. 
Communication 
• Promote the strategy and objectives to internal and external stakeholders. 
• Advocate on behalf of Badminton England in collaboration with fellow Board Members, the Chair and staff.

Business Transformation 

Our aim is to continue to drive transformation, both culturally and technically, to improve out pro-activity and become more agile in identifying future opportunities. 

Commercial Leisure Sector 

A key strategic target for Badminton England is to significantly increase the number of players taking part in regular organised play and competition. In this context the plan is to build and develop commercial partnerships with the major leisure centre operators. 

Badminton England is the owner, and host, of the YONEX All England Open Badminton Championships. Our aim is to continue to grow the Championships into an event that is truly recognised within the British sporting calendar; to do this we are seeking to grow the investment and partnerships in the UK and globally that can help us deliver this exciting aspiration. 

Volunteering 

Badminton England relies on volunteers assisting at events and organising / delivering local badminton activities. Further development and emphasis is required to create a modern volunteering recruitment, deployment and retention strategy. 

Competition and Development 

Badminton England create and support pathways to encourage players to fulfil their potential at all stages of their development. Further creative and innovative ways to signpost these opportunities are important to the ongoing growth of the sport. 

Elite Sport Performance 

Success at major events is a key focus for Badminton England. Leadership and continuous improvement at elite level is critical.

How to apply

Terms of Appointment 
• It is expected that Board members will commit up to 20 days per year. 
• This will consist of 6 – 8 Board meetings per year, leadership/support of an Advisory Board, attendance at General Meetings and attending events in an ambassadorial capacity. 
• The majority of meetings will take place at the National Badminton Centre in Milton Keynes. 
• The role is non-remunerated. Badminton England will reimburse domestic expenses for Board activity. Should overseas travel be required, such expenses will be reimbursed.
