GB Rowing Team Media Manager

Salary: £35,000 - £40,000 per annum depending on experience

Location: National Training Centre, Caversham, near Reading

Job Purpose

To design, organise, manage and implement the media, communications and PR activity of the GB Rowing Team Senior, U23 and Junior, Olympic and Paralympic squads. To achieve positive coverage through traditional media and digital channels.

Context of the Role

British Rowing has a world class high-performance programme and is currently the leading rowing nation at the Olympic and Paralympic Games.  The GB Rowing Team’s results at Olympic and Paralympic Games and World Championships over the last 30 years have been of the highest standard and this provides the sport of rowing with an excellent base from which to broaden the appeal of the sport, grow participation, maximise our current income streams and develop new ones.

The world of sports marketing and media management is changing and developing at a pace that continually requires speed of thought, fast response times, innovative thinking and an attitude to continually look for different ways of working in order to engage with current audiences and attract new people to the sport, especially young people.

Social and online media, in particular, presents an opportunity for rowing and British Rowing to communicate in ways that are cost-effective and successful at reaching new audiences.  A passion for communication, PR and new technology is, therefore, essential.  In addition, the candidate must care about high performance sport as the environment in which they will be working can often involve moments of high drama and pressure both during periods of training and competition.

In communications, there is no substitute for being present and on the ground and it would be advantageous if the candidate had participated and competed in rowing over a number of years because having a strong feel for, and understanding of, rowing should naturally assist in the identification of opportunities to best tell the story of the GB Rowing Team.

The GB Rowing Team Media Manager reports into the Director Partnerships & Communications and will have a strong working relationship with them as well as the Director of Performance and the Head of Communications & Marketing in order to skilfully integrate GB Rowing Team activity into wider British Rowing media, communications and PR activity.

Key responsibilities

  • Be the in-house Media Manager for the GB Rowing Team during training, selection and international competition working directly with the rowers, coaches, support staff and Director of Performance
  • Produce a Media, Communications and PR Plan for the GB Rowing Team each season, for Senior, U23 and Junior squads, consulting mostly with the Director of Partnerships & Communications, Director of Performance and Head of Communications & Marketing
  • Work closely with the wider Partnerships & Communications team to create, collate and distribute content about the GB Rowing Team across British Rowing owned channels, partner channels and to the media
  • Be the first point of contact for all GB Rowing Team media enquiries
  • Organise press briefings, team announcements and content capture days to achieve positive coverage for the GB Rowing Team
  • Maintain good working relationships with all sports media and be the main point of contact for British Rowing’s main media partner, the BBC
  • Work directly with the appointed photographer in the field and utilise images available to promote the GB Rowing Team
  • Advise on and manage communications solutions around issues management, handling difficult stories in traditional and social media for the GB Rowing Team
  • Liaise with external bodies (including UK Sport, the British Olympic Association, the British Paralympic Association and World Rowing (FISA)) and work to ensure accuracy of information regarding British Rowing on external digital channels, websites and publications
  • Help GB Rowing Team athletes to promote themselves and the sport of rowing through the media and their own social media, including arranging any necessary training and providing informal briefings and guidance
  • Support British Rowing Head of Commercial to deliver commercial partner activation related to the GB Rowing Team
  • Monitor and report on output and coverage in line with other British Rowing communications and marketing metrics and identify where improvements can be made
