Salary: Expenses Paid

Location: Home & Office based. Meetings will be held at the Para Dance UK head office and via conference call.

Purpose of the Role:

With other Trustees, provide collective governance and strategic leadership to the Para Dance UK management team.

Key Responsibilities:

Para Dance UK Trustee

  • Ensure that the Para Dance UK complies at all times with its governing document, charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations
  • Confirm the Para Dance UK pursues its objects as defined in its governing document “to promote and develop wheelchair dancing as a sport and leisure activity across the country and to raise the standard of coaching and competition in the UK and internationally at all levels”.
  • Ensure proper financial control and ensure that WDSA (UK) applies its resources exclusively in pursuance of its Objectives i.e. the charity must not spend money on  activities that are not included in its Objectives, no matter how worthwhile or charitable  those activities are
  • Set and maintain vision, mission and values
  • Ensure accountability
  • Support the operational management of the organisation
  • Safeguard the good name and values of Para Dance UK
  • Maintain effective board performance and ensure the effective and efficient administration of the charity including funding, sponsorship, insurance and premises
  • Promote Para Dance UK.
  • Act in the best interests of the charity, never in the interests of yourself or another organisation

In addition to the above statutory duties, each trustee should use any specific skills, knowledge or experience they have to help the board reach sound decisions. These may involve scrutinising board and focus group papers, leading discussions, focusing on key issues, providing advice and guidance on new initiatives and other issues in which the trustee has special expertise.

A trustee is required to act reasonably and prudently in all matters relating to the charity and must always bear the interests of Para Dance UK in mind.

Section 72(1) of the Charities Act 1993 disqualifies anyone who:

  • has been convicted of an offence involving deception or dishonesty, unless the conviction is spent
  • is an undischarged bankrupt
  • has previously been removed from trusteeship of a charity by the court or the Charity Commissioners
  • is under a disqualification order under the Company Directors Disqualification Act 1986

It is an offence to act as a charity trustee while disqualified unless the Charity Commission has given a waiver under section 72(4) of the Charities Act 1993.

Person Specification

In addition to the qualities needed by all trustees you should also have the following attributes:

  • Experience of communication work and liaison by disability or analogous charities or voluntary organisations
  • A sound knowledge and background of skills needed for being a Trustee/management position
  • Excellent people skills
  • Knowledge of PARA DANCE UK work and the wider issues facing charities
  • Have awareness of the issues facing Disabled Dancers.
