Director of Commerical and Operations

Salary: Basic salary plus variable commission and performance related bonus to be agreed dependent upon skills and experience.

Location: South West

Main Purpose

To lead, structure and deliver successfully the Commercial Strategy for Surfing England (SE), maximise and grow revenue, drive recruitment of sponsors, partners and secure public funding; and to lead the operational team to deliver effective and efficient daily operations of SE.

The key objective of this role is to increase organisational revenue and profits managing and improving existing revenue streams, developing new revenue streams and diversifying SE strategy in order to provide sustainable long term growth for SE and enable SE to support the development of a Healthy Surfing Community by reinvesting any profits made into the surfing community.

Individual Responsibilities

− Act as Executive Lead and Ambassador for the National Governing Body.

− Work with the Board and the operational team to develop a compelling Commercial Strategy and set targets that lead to a quantifiable increase in income for the organisation, both public and private.

− Establish annual Operational Delivery plans for each Strategic Objective (Governance and Operations, Participation and Performance), with clear, measurable targets and budgets, monitor execution and provide regular status reports to the Chair* and Board.

− Build and sustain strong relationships with key internal and external organisations such as BSURF, the ISA, Sport England, Government (national and local) and other public stakeholders to ensure maximum external funding and profile for the sport.

− Develop and maintain influential relationships with key stakeholders, sponsors and partners to encourage participation and to maximise the opportunities from these partnerships.

− Lead the culture of SE to ensure we keep the surfer at the heart of everything we do and grow a Healthy Surfing Community.

− Ensure a joined up approach to business and brand development.

Team Responsibilities

Lead the operational team to ensure they:

− Best deliver SE’s strategy and support the vision of a Healthy Surfing Community.

− Manage daily organisational operations across multiple projects, ensuring an integrated approach to delivery across the organisation.

− Deliver on operational targets as part of annual strategic plans agreed with the Board.

− Secure funding and/or sponsors with global, national and regional remit from initial strategy, research, engagement, proposals and contract negotiation.

− Develop research and insight to support a customer oriented service and develop new and effective ideas for increasing participation in surfing and SE membership.

− Develop and implement mapping, tracking and reporting on progress to ensure best return on investment is achieved.

− Establish and grow a workforce development plan to support and sustain surfing in England.

− Develop a quality mark and accreditation programme that can be used to kitemark clubs and activities in conjunction with other existing kitemarks.

− Build a network of regional partners capable of delivering a tangible increase in participation across England.

− Organise world class events.

− Support the delivery of a Team England talent and performance strategy.

− Provide expertise and technical assistance to external organisations to support SE.

− Maximise the profile and reputation of SE in the UK.

− identify additional upsell opportunities and manage spending.

− Communicate and raise awareness of surfing and of related environmental issues related to the sport.

− Support SE and undertake any other duties required by the Chair*.

− Comply with all SE policies, in particular those relating to equality and diversity.

− Have fun at work and maintain a ‘surfer first’ philosophy throughout the NGB.

Competencies and Experience

− Highly self-motivated and driven individual with a proven ability to exceed commercial income targets.

− Significant, demonstrable experience of commercial sales and fundraising, ideally within major brands relating to sport or National Governing Bodies.

− Existing network of contacts with key decision makers in brands, sports and key organisations.

− Has, or is able to attain, a reasonable understanding of technical issues relating to SE. It is not necessary to be a surfer, but must be able to understand the surfing community and culture and the challenges and opportunities around surfing.

− Able to think strategically, develop implementation plans and manage successful delivery to achieve desired outcomes.

− Experience of working at Senior Executive level and working with a Board of Directors.

− A confident and persuasive negotiator with experience writing basic contracts and unafraid to develop skills in this area.

− A proven ability to deliver on time and within agreed budgets.

− Experience of leading and managing people, programmes and budgets.

− Is calm, mature, self-aware, has a growth mindset and a readiness to learn.

− Builds effective relationships both internally and externally, ensuring that all are committed to the common purpose.

− Encourages and supports organisations to make the best use of their resources and capabilities.

− Communicates, both orally and in writing, ideas and information in ways that are appropriate, accurate and concise.

− Listens actively to individuals and organisations to ensure that mutual outcomes are met.

− Solves problems creatively by identifying the problem, evaluating the alternatives and finding innovative solutions.

− Can see opportunities and originate action in pursuit of the achievement of SE’s strategic objectives.

− Is comfortable with challenge and change, both individually and with others. − Makes controlled responses in stressful situations, such as when faced with negative responses or extreme workload.

*Chair or any such Board/Executive lead that may be identified or introduced from time to time. Surfing England places great emphasis on the diversity and representativeness of its leadership and as such specifically welcomes applications from minority groups.
