We now have an exciting opportunity for someone to join our team as a Data Protection Officer to develop & improve British Cycling’s Data Protection provisions ensuring compliance with relevant data protection laws and related fields, group-wide guidelines and standards and operating in accordance with best practice in the relevant sector.

The role of a Data Protection Officer is all about:

  • Informing and advising British Cycling and its employees about their obligations to comply with relevant data protection laws whilst maintaining and updating the organisation’s Article 30 processing record
  • Co-ordinating responses to data subject access requests including management of responses in accordance with relevant statutory timescales
  • Addressing ad hoc internal and external queries relating to privacy issues including carrying out data protection risk assessments where appropriate
  • Drafting contractual, legal and information clauses, including privacy notices
  • Negotiations with partner organisations and vendors in relation to data sharing relationships
  • Coordinating organisation-wide data protection compliance initiatives
  • Identification of data protection compliance issues that need addressing
  • To be the first point of contact for supervisory authorities and for individuals whose data is processed
  • Maintaining registration with the Information Commissioner's Office
  • Implement controls for compliance with the UK and EU data protection legislation and relevant codes of practice
  • Undertaking ad hoc audits of personal data-handling activity in various teams to ensure compliance with internal policies
  • Liaising with relevant IT and compliance teams to test the company’s capability to respond to a breach or other serious contingencies in its operations that affects personal data handling and data protection (both for automated and manual information); and
  • Developing and maintaining policy and procedures, deliver presentations, and in conjunction with the L&D Business Partner facilitate both face to face and on-line training to the relevant audiences
  • Analysing and reporting to senior stakeholders on types of Data Protection and information privacy issues, security breaches and investigate their root causes and provide action plans for their resolution

You’ll come up with ideas to drive the Integrity & Compliance team forward and work cross functionally with our Regional teams and support network at the National Cycling Centre to promote these activities and initiatives.  In return for delivering consistent results, you’ll receive the opportunity to learn and develop, as well as exciting opportunities to broaden your role and grow within the organisation.

The key skills, knowledge and experience we are looking for are:

  • A Data Protection qualification (e.g. CIPP/E), some other similar compliance qualification or legal qualification
  • In depth knowledge of data protection laws and practices and their application in a business setting, including General Data Protection Regulation and Data Protection Act 2018
  • Experience of developing data protection policies and procedures and monitoring and advising on compliance
  • Experience of conducting data protection audits and working with others constructively, persuasively and promptly to address adverse findings
  • Knowledge of direct marketing regulations and cross border privacy issues
  • Basic knowledge of information security
  • Ability to exercise sound judgement when interacting with internal stakeholders
  • Ability to draft clear and concise briefings and reports and to simplify and explain information appropriately for different audiences
  • Experience of delivering training and guidance to a diverse audience
  • Ability to demonstrate superior IT and digital skills including MS-Office

This is a profession which is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and therefore an Enhanced Disclosure & Barring Service check will be required.
