Exciting opportunities exist to shape the continuing growth and development of British Weight Lifting, the national governing body for the sports of Olympic Weight Lifting and Para-Powerlifting to refresh the skills of the board of directors in anticipation of certain retirements over the course of the next six months.

The role of the Board is to ensure that the vision for Weight Lifting and Para-Powerlifting and corporate objectives are achieved, that the expectations of all stakeholders are fulfilled and a sound financial position is maintained.

Successful candidates will be able to contribute to the strategic leadership of British Weight Lifting, equipped with the skills and knowledge to meet the challenges and opportunities faced by the sport that has over the last 5 years become increasingly diverse in terms of participation and witnessed increasing national and international female and para-powerlifting success.

Comfortable working at a strategic level alongside a mix of staff and volunteers, candidates require knowledge or experience of one or more of community grassroots sport development, finance, human relations, marketing or public relations.

Additionally, successful candidates will be able to demonstrate success in a senior role in the private, public and/or voluntary sectors; an understanding of the role of an Independent or non-executive director in promoting good governance; a good understanding of the UK’s sporting landscape and the role that sport plays in society; the ability to consider complex issues related to evaluating strategic performance, think creatively and strategically; the skills to challenge current thinking at Board level and present views in a clear and concise manner; and a clear commitment to improving diversity and equality and understanding the needs of under-represented groups in sport. It is anticipated that successful applicant will be invited to join sub-committees of the Board following induction.

Appointments will be for initial terms of 4 years, with the possibility of reappointment for a second term.

BWL’s offices are based at Leeds and Loughborough and much of the work can be conducted from home. The role involves attending 5 board meetings per annum, sub-committee meetings and the Annual General Meeting. It will require a time commitment of up to 12 days per annum, for which reasonable subsistence and travel expenses incurred are payable. Role Description

Role Purpose

To make an effective and positive contribution to the Board of British Weight Lifting, the company’s strategic direction and successful delivery of the corporate plan.

Core Responsibilities

1. To attend Board meetings and Committee meetings as required and contribute appropriately to ensure that the corporate objectives of British Weight Lifting, key performance indicators and the overall vision for the sport are achieved within the budget set.

2. Provide strategic insight and support to the Chief Executive and management team.

3. To attend the Annual General Meeting each year, and any other General Meeting that may be called from time to time.

4. Where appropriate, act as board appointee to any Committee and undertake the roles and responsibilities set out in the applicable job description for that position.

5. Support and participate in appropriate activities, competitions and events as requested to raise the profile of British Weight Lifting.

6. Prepare appropriately for each board meeting and to keep up to date with current developments in sport.

7. Participate in an agreed appraisal and review process for board members.

Person Specification

Essential

Experience of working in a senior capacity in at least one of

  • financial management,
  • human relations,
  • marketing,
  • public relations,
  • community development
  • Board level experience of setting strategic plans and working to defined objectives
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to present own views in a clear, concise manner.
  • Comprehensive literacy, numeracy and IT skills
  • Previous experience of high level board or committee activity in a voluntary or not for profit organisation

Desirable

Demonstrable knowledge of the sporting landscape Knowledge and experience of good practice in corporate governance Experience of setting, monitoring and managing a budget Knowledge and experience of the requirements of high performance sport and/or grass roots sport development A relevant professional qualification
