Job Description

The British Athletes Commission (BAC) is seeking to appoint three new Non-Executive Independent Directors and is particularly looking for people with expertise and a strong background in governance, commercial, and/or communications. Previous board experience is not necessarily a requirement but an interest in sport and athlete welfare is essential. Alongside these areas of expertise, the BAC is also looking to recruit a fourth Non-Executive Director to their board as an athlete member. Experience of competing internationally as an athlete is an essential condition for applying for this position. The initial appointment for all four Director roles will be for a four-year period which could be potentially renewed for a further four-year term. 

The BAC is currently funded by UK Sport to ensure that UK elite athletes in the World Class Performance system train and compete within a fair, supportive and transparent system. At a time of heightened awareness for the need to support athlete welfare in the UK the BAC is looking to reshape its focus and direction to ensure it fully meets the needs of its members. Responding to the ‘athlete voice’ review commissioned by UK Sport and the Duty of Care recommendations made by Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, the Non-Executive Director will be expected to contribute effectively to the organisations new strategy as well as give opinion on the future direction of the organisation. 

This is a fantastic opportunity to help shape the ongoing development of the BAC at a critical time for the organisation and its members. 

Role: 

The main duties of the Independent Non-Executive Director will be: 

• To contribute to the effective monitoring of strategic objectives and provide informed challenge and debate in relation to all aspects of BAC activity 
• To advise, guide, challenge and support the executive team 
• To act as an ambassador of the British Athletes Commission 

Requirements: 

• An impressive track record of success in the private, public and/or voluntary sector 
• The ability to operate effectively at board level 
• Ability to think creatively and strategically; the skills to enhance and constructively challenge current thinking at Board level 
• A clear commitment to improving athlete wellbeing and understanding the needs high performance athletes, with particular reference to athlete mental health 
• A willingness and ability to develop a solid and collaborative working relationship with the executive team 
• An understanding and experience of the legal and governance aspects is essential 

The successful individual will be able to demonstrate independent judgement, clear strategic thinking, the ability to think creatively and gravitas. 

Independent Non-Executive Directors will be full members of the Board and will be expected attend all Board meetings. 

The Board currently holds five half-day face-to-face Board meetings per year. Board teleconferences may take place in between these, in exceptional circumstances, generally on weekday evenings.
