Camp and Competition Medical Officer

Salary: Annual fee for this contract will be £20,000 per annum

Location: Flexible working location

UK Athletics is the National Governing Body for athletics and oversees the management and development of track and field, the biggest Olympic and Paralympic sport from grassroots right through to elite level, throughout the UK.

We are looking for a Camp and Competition Medical Officer to join UKA on a consultancy contract to support the WCP and VLM training camp strategy, by providing and managing appropriate medical support at international training camps and any other supportive roles identified by the CMO and/or Head of Endurance. This person will also be responsible for supporting the WCP and Performance Pathway by coordinating medical support for identified international competitions.

Other duties involved with this role will be;

  • To perform a standardised risk assessment including travel to review and enhance local clinical pathways and provision for identified British Athletics WWT and altitude camps
  • To provide clinical oversight and athlete health education & risk management associated with identified training camps e.g. vaccination, antimalarial and clinical protocols and team education
  • To review Medical Questionnaires before identified camps and competitions
  • To provide medical support on key training camps, as agreed with the CMO and Head of Endurance and targeted telephone/email support for travelling physiotherapists for identified training camps
  • To attend the World Cross Country (biennial) and European Cross Country (annual), the British Athletics Endurance Holding Camp for World/European Championships and Olympics and other competitions as identified by CMO, as British Athletics team doctor
  • To provide clinical oversight of blood testing for endurance athletes prior to altitude training camps
  • To support the identification and recruitment of contracted doctors for selected ‘standalone’ international competitions
  • To support the Performance Pathway physiotherapist in their role of managing the education and screening of pathway athletes to assist with the successful transition of pathway athletes to the World Class Performance plan

The person in this role will need to establish and maintain excellent working relationships with British Athletics coaching, medical and therapy staff, endurance and performance pathway team staff, and athletes and coaches that are part of the Endurance (WCP and VLM) pathways.

All medical notes must be kept on the British Athletics electronic note taking system (Smartabase).

Knowledge and skills required for this role are;

Experience working as a sports physician in elite sport multi-disciplinary environment, ideally experience working in track and field. Previous work on international camps or competitions including performing risk assessments would be an advantage

A high level of organisational skills, a collaborative, effective and flexible communication style and ability to perform a clinical risk assessment.

Education and Qualifications required are;

A post-graduate qualification in Sports Medicine is essential, MFSEM or FFSEM, GMC registration in the UK. A sspecialist Register for Sport & Exercise Medicine in the UK would be desirable.
