Head of Hampshire Badminton Performance and Development

Salary:​ £27,000

Location: The job requires the post holder to work at the Westgate Badminton Centre on alternate weekday evenings (5pm to 10pm) and one day of each weekend (9am - 9pm). The remaining hours can be worked flexibly, whether at home or at other badminton locations; and at times that suit the post holder. A shared office at the Centre is provided.

Job role

Reporting directly to the Directors of the Hampshire Badminton Association, you will be responsible for developing and delivering a Badminton Performance and Development Programme for Hampshire. Hours​: 40 over 7 days, including evenings and weekends.

Hampshire Badminton Association is responsible for :

● increasing participation in badminton in Hampshire

● developing the sport in Hampshire schools

● supporting Hampshire’s badminton clubs and the league competitions they play in

● supporting and coordinating the coaching of badminton

● the junior, senior and masters teams that represent the County in national competition

● operating the Westgate Badminton Centre, Winchester - a high quality venue dedicated to badminton Hampshire Badminton Association works closely with Badminton England to support its initiatives to develop the sport from grass-roots, through to international level competition.

The Job

Your primary role will be to formulate and lead the delivery of a Hampshire Badminton Performance and Development Programme for players across Hampshire.

The Programme shall include:

● A grass-roots element - to increase the number of young people playing badminton in Hampshire’s schools and after-school clubs

● A participation element - to promote and develop Hampshire’s badminton clubs and the league competitions they play in

● A coaching support and coordination element - to promote and assist existing and new badminton coaches and to help them find coaching opportunities in clubs and schools across the County

● A competition element - to organise and run local, County and national tournaments, in particular promoting Westgate Badminton Centre as a venue for playing and watching high quality badminton

● A representation element - to organise the junior and senior representative County teams and squads in support of the Junior and Senior County Coaching Team. Operation of the Westgate Badminton Centre is shared between the employees of Hampshire Badminton Association. Therefore this role includes duties at the Westgate Badminton Centre during its opening hours, including opening and closing the Centre, operating its facilities, and first aid cover.

Key attributes we are looking for:

Flexibility – On occasions, the post holder will be required to cover very busy weekend tournaments, and will need to travel at evenings and weekends to where badminton is being played in the County.

People management skills – There are a large number of people involved in the administration of badminton in Hampshire’s schools, clubs, and County squads and teams, and they are distributed across this large County. We are looking for someone who can reach out to all those involved in the sport and make them part of a coherent programme for the development of the sport in Hampshire.

Positive attitude – The post holder will display a positive attitude their work and a positive attitude towards all players, of all ages and abilities.

Desirable for this role:

● Experience in sports development.

● An understanding of badminton and its local, County, and national organisation.

● A driving license and access to a car

● First aid qualification and safeguarding children certification (or be willing to obtain them)

● The successful candidate will be required to undertake an enhanced DBS check and additional safeguarding courses
