Chief Executive Officer

Salary: Competitive

Location: Manchester/Leeds

The Rugby Football League (RFL) is the national governing body for Rugby League in the UK and is committed to developing and growing the sport at all levels.
The RFL administers the England Rugby League team, the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup, Betfred Super League and the Betfred Championship and Betfred League 1. It also supports and administers the grassroots game.

The organisation is focused on excellence in coaching and development and helping more players start, stay and succeed in the nation’s most exciting summer sport.
The RFL works in partnership with leagues, clubs and Rugby League Foundations to offer new ways to play, from Play Touch Rugby League to Wheelchair RL. It has recently launched a Women’s Super League competition and is committed to grow significantly, opportunities for girls and women to play sport. Together, the sport is working hard to inspire and develop the next generation of young players and fans.

Background

The RFL is looking to appoint a new Chief Executive following the decision by Nigel Wood to step down after 10 years in the role and 16 years on the Board. Under his leadership, the league expanded in size and geographical scope and on-field development saw the men’s team reach a World Cup final in 2017 for the first time in 22 years.

His successor will build on this legacy as the sport looks ahead to hosting a domestic World Cup in 2021 and an opportunity to expand the game beyond core markets via a World Cup in North America in 2025. It will be the first time the tournament has been held outside Europe and Australasia.

The departure of such a long-serving leader gives the RFL the opportunity to take a fresh look at this pivotal role. The landscape in sport has changed dramatically since 2008 and even more rapidly in the last couple of years as technology has created opportunities and challenges, in equal measure, around audience/fan engagement and youth participation.

The Role

To lead the RFL to ensure that the strategy, targets and policies of the RFL, and the wider sport are fully delivered. Leading staff and all stakeholders to ensure the sport continues to grow, is a commercial success, and is recognised as a being a deliverer of best practice.
