Chair - Birmingham Organising Committee for the 2022 Commonwealth Games

The government wishes to appoint a Chair to Birmingham 2022 Ltd, the Organising Committee (OC) of the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
On 21st December 2017 the Commonwealth Games Federation awarded the hosting rights for the 2022 Games to Birmingham. The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport has been working with Commonwealth Games England, Birmingham City Council and the West Midlands Combined Authority to put in place the necessary structures to deliver a world class Games in 2022. Central to this will be the OC, which will have responsibility for planning and delivering the Games.
The time commitment for Chair role will be an average of 1 day per week. The successful candidate will be an ambassador for the Games and lead the strategic direction and governance of the OC.
The Chair will develop and maintain effective relationships with key partners. They will be a strong advocate for sport and be passionate about the Commonwealth Games movement and its ambitions for positive social and economic benefits for individuals and communities, nationally and internationally.
The Role
The Chair will:
- Provide visible leadership to the OC, promoting a safe and successful Commonwealth Games.
- Hold the Chief Executive and Senior Management team to account for the delivery of the Games.
- Develop effective relationships with key partners including Ministers, senior politicians in the Host City and region, police authorities, the Commonwealth Games Federation, Commonwealth Games England and representatives of funding groups, acting as an ambassador for Birmingham 2022.
Person Specification
Candidates must be able to demonstrate:
- A record of achievement in business, public service or sport.
- Political sensitivity and understanding, with ability to secure the confidence of Ministers, and highly effective, influential and collaborative relationships working with national, regional and local government.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal and presentation skills, including with the media.
- An understanding of the complexities and subtleties of large organisations.

About Birmingham 2022 Ltd
The Commonwealth Games is one of the largest mega multi-sport events in the world, attracting more than 6,500 athletes and officials and over a million spectators. The role of the OC is to deliver an outstanding 2022 Commonwealth Games for the athletes, the spectators, for those in the host city, the country and the Commonwealth Games family.
The OC of the 2022 Commonwealth Games, Birmingham 2022 Ltd will be a Non-Departmental Public Body (NDPB), and its sponsoring government department will be the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.
In addition to the Chair, the OC will comprise five unpaid non-executive directors and a number of nominees from each of the Games partners. At full complement the OC leadership will be drawn from a range of backgrounds, bringing an effective mix of skills and knowledge from the region, sports, finance and business worlds.
As an NDPB, certain governance structures will be required by government, and in addition to chairing the OC Board, the appointee will be required to participate in other board committees as necessary, likely to include the Risk & Audit Committee and the Remunerations Committee.
The Chair will be appointed to the Organising Committee on a five year term until it ceases operations in the months following completion of the Games in early 2023.
This appointment is made by the Prime Minister.
