The Sport and Recreation Alliance believes that that the power of sport and recreation can change lives and bring communities together. With our members and in partnership with the wider sector, we make the most of opportunities and tackle the areas that provide a challenge. We provide advice, support and guidance to our members and the sector, who represent traditional governing bodies of games and sport, county sports partnerships, outdoor recreation, water pursuits, and movement and dance for exercise. As the voice of the sector, we work with Government, policy makers and the media to make sure grassroots sport and recreation grows and thrives. Having an active nation is important as it delivers huge benefits to society and the millions of participants, volunteers, staff and spectators.

Role Summary

The role will focus on developing and driving forward our ambition to make sport and recreation volunteering more representative and more accessible. Volunteering unites the entire sport and recreation sector and it is a key objective in our 2017-21 The Heart of an Active Nation strategy.

The role will also be responsible for developing income for this area of work which is essential for our volunteering work to continue to develop. This will include working with our Business Development Manager on commercial partnerships, and creating and submitting bids for grants and trusts. The role holder will work to develop and manage relationships with all key volunteering stakeholders.

Volunteers are integral to making sport and recreation happen and can change lives and bring communities together. This new strategic role, as part of our Marketing, Communications and Member Engagement (MCME) team will be busy with a real opportunity to demonstrate tangible outcomes so it represents a great chance to make your mark. Main Tasks and Responsibilities 

  • Lead and help shape the delivery of our strategy for putting volunteers into grassroots sport
  • Develop funding proposals on volunteering for submission to external funders and potential corporate partners
  • Manage and develop our advice and support to members and grassroots sports clubs on volunteering, including paid-for training and fee-generating bespoke consultancy
  • Help build a strong audience of grassroots clubs and organisations using the Alliance for their volunteering needs
  • Support and work with volunteer managers across the sector to build the support we offer
  • Help manage and oversee successfully funded volunteering projects and areas of work
  • Help shape the external environment for sport volunteering, working with the Policy, Governance and External Affairs team to influence the development of policy and regulation on volunteering and social action
  • Support the wider team on engagement with members on volunteering issues
  • Line manage the volunteer Communications Officer in a matrix structure with the Communications & Engagement Manager

Person Specification

Essential skills, knowledge and experience

  • Experience of establishing new funding sources, including corporate partnership opportunities and raising money from trusts and foundations
  • Ability to think strategically and to create and develop volunteering assets and activities
  • Entrepreneurial skills and flair to identify opportunities
  • Results-driven mentality
  • Good negotiating and influencing skills
  • Excellent communications and interpersonal skills
  • Self-starter with ability to work on own initiative and as part of a highly motivated team
  • Excellent organisational skills and the ability to prioritise workloads and manage time efficiently

Desirable skills, knowledge and experience

  • Line management experience
  • Knowledge and experience of impact reporting and measurement
  • Understanding of volunteering and sport and recreation
  • Some knowledge of the event management process
  • Campaign and communications experience
  • Experience of working with social media as part of wider PR initiatives
  • Confident trainer or workshop leader
  • Experience using a CRM system
  • Project management skills
  • Confident to present to audiences and able to chair meetings
