Independent Trustees

Description of the company

The Association for Physical Education (afPE) is the only Physical Education (PE) Subject Association in the UK.

We are committed to being the representative agency of choice for people and organisations delivering or supporting the delivery of physical education, sport and physical activity in educational contexts and in the wider community.

Our work includes developing physical education related policy, responding to consultations, providing resources, delivering outstanding professional learning across the sector, developing national standards with government and partner agencies, and promoting the subject in a variety of forums.

Our purpose is to promote and maintain high standards and safe practice in all aspects and at all levels of physical education, sport and physical activity. We work to influence developments at national and local levels that will impact on pupils’ physical health and wellbeing. We are not about quick fix solutions. We want a sustainable legacy, so that over the next 15 years we contribute to significantly reducing the number of inactive children and young people and ensure better emotional health and wellbeing. Proactive solutions developed and delivered across the sector by key stakeholders in true partnership, will ensure children and young people have the knowledge, skills but more importantly the physical health and emotional well-being to achieve the very best that they can.

Summary of the role

The Board provides strategic direction and leadership for afPE, ensuring it remains solvent, well-run, compliant where necessary and delivers the charitable outcomes in accordance with its Articles of Association, charity and company law. The Board has responsibility to use reasonable care and skill to ensure that the charity is efficient and that risks are assessed and managed.

It is an exciting time for the Board and as we grow, we are keen to recruit independent trustees with specific expertise.

The current afPE Board comprises members, from a wide-range of backgrounds who possess various skill sets, particularly in the field of physical education and sport. We are looking for trustees with experience and expertise beyond physical education and sport, in the following areas, either acquired within the sport industry or in business:

  • Finance
  • Human Resources
  • Business & Marketing
  • Health & Wellbeing

Person Specification (required expertise/skills/qualities and whether essential/desirable)

We are looking for trustees with the following experience:

  • Finance

We are looking for a trustee who can contribute to the management and monitoring of the Association’s finances through experience of managing significant budgets and working knowledge of the reporting and controls that are necessary to enable robust high level financial oversight. You will have an understanding of the need for sound financial management in an organisation operating in the not for profit sector. You will be comfortable in assessing risk and making judgements in leading the charity to best meet its objectives over the short, medium and long term.

  • Human Resources (HR)

We require a trustee with HR experience at a senior level who can support the operational team with regards to recruitment and training, can provide the Board with advice on the development and application of HR policy and lead on any HR issue that arises.

  • Business & Marketing

To fully realise our potential, we will need to continue to evolve our organisational model and financial strategy. We would welcome applications from potential Trustees with experience of leading organisations through strategic growth. All candidates will be expected to have some degree of confidence in providing advice on growth strategies, delivered through traditional and digital channels, as well as empathy with the challenges of growth experienced by a relatively small team.

  • Health & Wellbeing

We are looking for a trustee who works within the health and wellbeing sector, to support the strategic development of the organisation in relation to the expansion of its work in the health and emotional wellbeing of children and young people. afPE recognises that physical education, sport and physical activity are similar in that they all include physical movement, but there are important differences between them. The Association requires a trustee to support the operational positioning of the key areas that demonstrate the contribution to public health, including its contribution to addressing childhood obesity and to whole school approaches to health.

Whilst not essential, it would be preferable for candidates to demonstrate an interest in physical education, sport and/or physical activity.

Logistical Information (location and time commitment eg. quantity/frequency of meetings and format)

All trustees serve a three year term of office. Trustees may serve for two consecutive terms of three years.

The Board meets 5 times during the year. This includes the Annual General Meeting which is held in July. There may be additional occasions when Board members are called together. This may be for working party business or emergencies where important decisions have to be made. Individual Trustees may be invited to represent the Association by the Chief Executive and/or Chair, if needed.

Remuneration

This is a voluntary role. Relevant expenses, e.g. travel costs will be payable where appropriate for Board members on official business.
