Betting on sport

Sport and betting have always been linked. The laws of cricket and golf were only codified in the eighteenth century in order to settle wagers.  However, the relationship has changed significantly in recent years, particularly with the advent of the internet. New modes of betting – betting exchanges and in-play betting – have allowed betting industry profits to mushroom from £7bn in 2001 to £38bn in 2008, with no end in sight. At the same time, the risks to sport are ever increasing.
