Visas and migration

Sport is incredibly important for the UK economy. This contribution relies on the ability to stage world class leagues and events in which the world’s most talented individuals participate.

Any limitations on sports migrant mobility are therefore potentially damaging to sport, and it should be remembered that exceptionally talented players, coaches and administrators from overseas only represent a very small proportion of all inbound migrants.

Background
  • Under the Points Based System, sport migrants are able to enter the UK under Tier 2 (Sports People) or Tier 5 (Creative and Sporting).
  • The autonomy of sports organisations has allowed sport to define what standard of player should enter the UK for the benefit of their sport, and the Alliance has worked extensively alongside UK Sport, Sport England and the UK Border Agency to achieve appropriate entry routes.
Status
  • The Alliance strongly supports the exemption for sportspeople from non-EU migration limits, which ensures that British sport is able to attract and retain the best global talent.
  • It is also important that the exemption extends to dependents in order to avoid creating a disincentive for highly skilled sportspeople to come to the UK.
Actions

The Alliance will continue to engage with the UK Border Agency and the Migration Advisory Committee to ensure the needs of the sport and recreation sector are recognised within government.
