Communications Officer - Join In

Salary: £18,000

Location: Westminster, London

Overview

The Sport and Recreation Alliance believes that the power of sport and recreation can change lives and bring communities together. Together with our members and in partnership with the wider sector, we make the most of opportunities and tackle the areas that provide challenge. We provide advice, support and guidance to our members and the sector, who represent traditional governing bodies of games and sport, county sports partnerships, outdoor recreation, water pursuits, and movement and dance exercise. As the voice of the sector, we work with Government, policy makers and the media to make sure grassroots sport and recreation grows and thrives. Having an active nation is important as it delivers huge benefits to society and the millions of participants, volunteers, staff and spectators.

Role Summary

The Communications Officer – Join In is a new role and will be responsible for the day to day Join In communications. This includes promoting Join In, the activities of volunteers and clubs by driving traffic to the Join In website and through our other digital channels – primarily Facebook and Twitter. This includes delivering and measuring the performance of all of our digital output and keeping our content, relevant and lively. You will have the responsibility for the content on the website, our newsletters and our social content, producing, coordinating and commissioning output, publishing and assessing its effectiveness.

This is a role that will require a flexible approach, the capacity to recognise and address organisational needs, and the ability to meet competing deadlines.  You will be able to help set and deliver a communications plan across all channels and also help with the coordination of publishing projects – therefore some understanding, or experience, of managing a creative design (digital and print) process is important.

This a busy role with some responsibility so it represents a really good chance to learn and make your mark. The environment is very positive and fun as you would expect in a sporting organisation but we work hard.

Main Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Writing, commissioning and editing content – from Tweets and blogs to newsletters as part of communications and campaigns across all Join In channels
  • Managing the Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn feeds
  • Managing the website, keeping it up to date with relevant content and measuring its effectiveness using Google Analytics
  • Making sure that the Join In database of people and clubs is up to date and relevant so we are reaching the right people through our channels and that our information is relevant to them.
  • General administrative duties as required.
  • Any other duties as reasonably required.

Person Specification

  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to juggle tasks
  • Good team player ethos, willing to get ‘stuck-in’
  • Personable and able to establish relationships quickly
  • Pro-active and a self-starter
  • ‘Can do’ positive, attitude

Essential Experience

  • Strong, lively writing and editing skills with an excellent command of grammar and English
  • Ability to write for different audiences and understand how to adjust the messages to fit
  • A good understanding of social and digital media with some experience of managing social media channels
  • Ability to see the big picture and know the difference of ‘what’ to say as opposed to just ‘how’ to say it
  • Some understanding of promoting products and services of an organisation
  • Some experience in producing engaging and persuasive content

Desirable Attributes

  • Volunteering experience
  • Design skills
  • An active and keen interest in sport and recreation and the issues which affect the sector
  • An understanding of current digital marketing technologies and production tools
