Job Purpose

· To lead a team of support staff and athletes by providing inspirational and dynamic leadership and management to the Canoe Wales performance programme for Slalom, Sprint and Para canoe, which in turn supports the objectives of Sport Wales, British Canoeing and UK Sport.

· Reporting to the General Manager, this role is key to creating a high performance culture and developmental environment in Canoe Slalom, Canoe Sprint and Para canoe in which athletes, coaches and support staff work collaboratively together to realise their individual and collective potential.

· To lead the Canoe Wales performance programme, working with Sport Wales, all relevant constituent parts of Canoe Wales and British Canoeing, governing bodies, coaches, staff and athletes to deliver the existing strategy to April 2019 and develop a new strategy for the period 2019 – 2023.

· To initiate, manage and deliver the National performance strategy (and submission of plan to Sport Wales) and preview, monitor and review key objectives within the performance pathway and the talent pathway within Wales.

· To manage the Canoe Wales performance programme (Canoe slalom, sprint, paracanoe), ensuring that an appropriate high-quality training and racing programme is delivered within a set budget and to best practice, commensurate with agreed values and qualities.

· To manage and guide the performance and talent pathway staff, providing a supportive environment through one to one meetings and team forums, and report to the General Manager and Canoe Wales board to highlight, preview and review the activities of the team.

· You will need to work effectively with a variety of partners that will include: governing body staff, coaches, individual athletes, service providers, parents and/or guardians and clubs.

· You will need to meet the requirements to hold a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service certification.

Job Description / Main areas of responsibility

• Lead and deliver the Canoe Wales performance programme, working closely with Sport Wales, the Canoe Wales board and staff, the British Canoeing performance directorate and partners, to develop and implement the performance strategy, which will provide a clear vision, mission and objectives for athletes, coaches, support staff and clubs.

• Work closely with the identified Canoe Wales National coaches, responsible for setting the technical and day-to-day training programmes, ensuring a regular cycle of selection. planning, monitoring, and review of all performance aspects of the programme.

• Ensure effective and efficient delivery of the structures and systems of the Canoe Wales performance and talent pathway programmes, ensuring approved budget and monitoring systems are in place which meet requirements of the governing body and Sport Wales.

• Provide day-to-day direction, support and line management for identified coaches and support staff, ensuring all staff are performance managed appropriately, including conducting regular reviews and annual appraisals.

• Manage a programme of regular high quality coached training sessions for identified athletes at a variety of locations across Wales and the UK at weekends and weeklong training/race camps and at nominated camps in Europe.

• Create, deliver and review programmes that will provide appropriate coaching support and guided training to performance athletes within Wales and alongside British Canoeing programmes.

• Manage the development of a performance system for canoeing within Wales to ensure performance disciplines grow and will support athletes through the pathway and towards long term International success.

• Manage the Talent Pathway officers to develop a populated talent development pathway for canoeing in Wales.

• Develop and co-ordinate opportunities to attract talented performers into canoeing, working with voluntary club coaches.

• Work with the national coaches (slalom and sprint) to service the Canoe Wales performance pathway and talent pathway squads to include coaching delivery, coach deployment, athlete selection, scheduling of training and logistics for domestic competition.

• Establish a system to profile, track and monitor talent development and performance athletes and evaluate impact of specific training and racing interventions.

• Work with colleagues to maximize the development of competitive disciplines in Wales.

• Contribute to the overall development of canoeing within Wales.

• Take part in annual reviews and any training that may be required.

• Prepare regular written and oral reports as necessary relating to the post.
