National Talent Pathway Coach

Salary: Commensurate with experience

Term: Contract until March 31 2021

Location: Manchester [the role will include extensive national and international travel commitments].

Job Purpose

Employed by GB Taekwondo’s Talent Pathway programme, supported by Sport England, you will work collaboratively with the pathway and coaching team to drive the planning and implementation of an individualised training programme for athletes within the England Talent Pathway Squad. In addition, you will work in partnership with the Talent Pathway team to identify and select talented athletes into the Talent Pathway.

In an athlete centred development programme, you will be required to work selflessly in the interests of the athlete and collaboratively with a range of key individuals and support practitioners to ensure maximised progression for all athletes on the Talent Pathway.

The GB Taekwondo Talent Pathway is committed to developing athletes with ‘winning’ characteristics who are capable of thriving in a World Class Programme [Academy] and deliver future senior medal winning success.

This is not a typical coaching position. GB Taekwondo seek a unique person who can demonstrate a range of coaching and interpersonal skills. He or she will be an exceptional communicator with significant interpersonal skills, will have outstanding experience of coaching sport taekwondo at an elite level, and be committed to holistic talent development. Central to this role is the ability to engage with the athletes’ key stakeholders.

Whilst the majority of this position will be planning, delivery and provision of feedback from contact coaching time, the role will not comprise exclusively of this. As such the successful candidate will be required to respond to the entire breadth of the role in a dynamic style demonstrating a flexible and accommodating manner that contributes to the wider GB Taekwondo mission.

Main responsibilities

· To take primary responsibility for the design and delivery of high quality individual / group coaching sessions aligned with the principles of the Talent Pathway and holistic development in order that the programme develops athletes who are; Ready to train / ready to compete, who are non-dependent learners with good decision making abilities, and who are highly adaptable. Secondly, to create an environment where athletes are encouraged to identify and exploit their ‘x factor’ and to thrive over surviving through bi monthly training camps.

· The role holder will also be tasked with nurturing the delivery of the above attributes within the club environment.

· Work in conjunction with the Talent Pathway Manager and support practitioners to implement an athlete development framework / curriculum to support the long term development of programme athletes between the ages of 13 – 18 years.

· Develop talent confirmation processes which capture and evidence multidisciplinary talent characteristics which indicate high probability of an athlete’s future senior medal winning potential.

· Assist the Performance Director, Talent Pathway Manager and other Coaches, in the identification and selection of athletes to be included in the development squads and to represent Great Britain.

· Work collaboratively with the Talent Scout to identify, confirm and integrate high potential athletes into the Talent Pathway from all martial backgrounds.

· Working collaboratively with the Talent Pathway team, the National Coaches, the sport science and medicine teams and to develop individual athlete training plans.

· Work closely with the Performance Analysis team to drive factual athlete reports to enhance individual development across the England Talent Pathway.

· Engaging with club coaches to implement annual performance targets for all athletes on the Talent Pathway programme.

· To provide guidance and support to club coaches working with athletes within the talent programme.

· Visit selected GB Taekwondo clubs’ / talent clubs to assist and support the improvement of contemporary tactical and technical Taekwondo skills.

· Attendance and coaching at A Class and Major Championships throughout the calendar year.

· To commit to working mainly weekends with the rest of the time allocated to a minimum of one day per week in the office [Manchester] and the remaining time travelling to specific clubs’ / talent clubs.

· To commit to continued professional development.

Person Specification

· Demonstrate a deep understanding of technical and tactical Sport Taekwondo knowledge and experience of coaching at G1’s as well as athlete preparation for major internationals.

· An understanding of coaching pedagogy and how coaching behavior and practice can support learning/skill acquisition across periodised programmes.

· Evidence an ability to positively impact high potential athletes.

· Ability to provide effective evidence based formal and informal feedback to both athletes and coaches.

· Have a passion for the GB Taekwondo mission and a complete commitment to success and the ability to prioritise GB Taekwondo’s higher purpose.

· A comprehensive understanding of World Class standards and how to create optimal training environments, as well as the ability to develop future World Class athletes from potential to a robust and consistent international standard.

· Outstanding leadership skills with a proven ability to inspire and engage others in a long term vision.

· Demonstrates great judgement, diplomacy, and creative approaches to challenge traditional practices and assumptions and provide evidenced based solutions.

· Ability to listen effectively and question intelligently in order to creatively explore challenges and propose solutions.

· Self- awareness in identifying and proactively seeking external knowledge or expertise when required.

· Highly motivated with personal integrity and the ability to invoke trust and respect.

· Ability to convey an image that is consistent with organisational behaviors, demonstrating qualities, traits and demeanor that earns leadership respect.

· A high work ethic with great attention to detail.

· Appropriate First Aid qualification.

· Current passport.

· Full driving licence, own car and able to drive in the UK.

· A satisfactory DBS check is required.

· Ability to communicate fluently

· Willingness to work irregular hours (mainly weekends)and travel extensively both within the UK and overseas, with overnight stays and weekend work.

· Knowledge and commitment to safeguarding and experience of promoting and applying internal policies and processes to ensure best practice.

· Excellent written and oral communication and presentational skills.

· Experience of using IT systems and high level ability with Microsoft Office. The capability to communicate through modern media.

· British Taekwondo (BT) membership.

· BT Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Sport Taekwondo.

· Valid ETU Licence. 

The post holder will be required to undertake continual professional development:

· Sportscoach UK Safeguarding and Protecting Children workshop, and progressive CPD

· First Aid training

· Any other development and training deemed necessary in accordance with experience as well as be qualified to coach in the UK, and at G1 events / major Championships.
